IAS Shubham Gupta, born on 11 August 1993, in Jaipur, Rajasthan, secured AIR 6 in the CSE exam in 2018. This was his fourth attempt where he set a milestone of scoring 1067 out of 2025. Currently, he is posted as a collector of Gadchiroli, Maharashtra.

His life journey was not a smooth one and has to overcome obstacles from his pathway. He faces failures multiple times before his absolute success. However, because of his determination, sacrifice and a lot of hard work he was able to accomplish his UPSC journey.

Shubham Gupta Family Background

Shubham Gupta’s father’s name is Anil Gupta. His family has a small business and a small shoe shop. The business went into a loss when Shubham was in the seventh standard, and due to bankruptcy, he and his family had to shift to a small village Dahanu, Maharashtra. His mother is a homemaker, and her name is not revealed. Additionally, he has two older siblings, a brother whose name is Krishna Gupta and a sister whose name is Bhagyashree who is a CA by profession. Inspired by his businessman father he is also an entrepreneur.

Even though he was the youngest kid in the family, still he has a sense of responsibility. Because his brother was studying at IIT far from the home. Shubham used to reach the shop at 4 a.m. and stayed there until night. As his schedule was busy, he studies in the shop.

According to Shubham, his father is his role model. He inspired him a lot and always says to face all failures bravely.

IAS Shubham Gupta Educational Background

Shubham Gupta finished his education by traveling in different states of India. He finished primary school to seventh grade in Jaipur. After he moved with his family to Dhanau due to financial instability, he travels a long journey to Vapi, Gujarat to pursue further education.

There was no availability of English or Hindi medium schools in Dahanu. As the result, he studied from class 8th to 12th at Shree Swaminarayan Gurukul, Vapi, in Gujarat. The school was very far from the town, he used to go with his sister by train. He has to leave his house at 6 am and reach home only till 3 pm.

Since childhood, he was a brilliant student and as a result, in high school, he scored the highest marks from his district, Valsad. Following this, everyone advised him to choose the science stream, but he wanted the commerce stream. Therefore, he chooses commerce as his subject, because of his interest in economics.

Later on, he decided to move to Delhi for graduation in the commerce field. For this, he got selected for B. Com (honours) in the second cutoff and for Economics (honours) he got selected in the fourth cutoff. Unfortunately, it was already too late for him when he reached Delhi. Due to this, he could not able to pursue any of the courses, because of not present in the city. Still, he tried to talk to the college authority and the professor, but the result was not in his favour.

New sessions were already started but Shubham didn’t give up. After the repeated struggle and patience of 2 weeks, he finally made it to the University and was selected for Economics Honours. After that, he started his preparation for the UPSC exam.

Shubham Gupta Attempts

In 2015, his first attempt at UPSC, he could not clear the prelims exam, but despite getting depressed he try again and clear the exam with AIR 366, in 2016. But he was not satisfied with this thus he again appeared for the exams. Unfortunately, he didn’t clear the exam on his third try. Instead of giving up, he tried again and got AIR 6 in 2018.

Shubham Gupta Preparation Strategy

According to Shubham Gupta, newspapers and magazines reading are essential for the preparation of Prelims. He used to make notes out of them for his preparations. Also puts his focus on the NCERT books. First, he studied the syllabus carefully and go through several topics. NCERTs are the best books to build a strong base foundation on various topics.

Shubham also claims that solving mock tests and practicing them is a crucial part of preparation.

Answer writing is a very important part to score well in the main exam. Therefore, the candidates should practice writing answers daily. Additionally, you can try to evaluate your answers and compare them with previous years’ toppers.

He also makes sure to make his focus on revising the notes at least twice and thrice. This helps him to remember well. He also avoids reading any new book or other material some months before the examination.
