Durga Shakti Nagpal IAS Posting

Durga started her IAS job in the Punjab cadre. In June 2011, she started working for the Mohali district government, where she remained for 14 months. She exposed a land scam in Mohali while working as a trainee IAS official in Punjab.

After getting married to Abhishek Singh in August 2012, she transferred to the Uttar Pradesh (UP) division and became the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Sadar, Noida. Later, she was chosen to serve as Gautam Budh Nagar’s SDM.

Illegal mining Case

When Durga organized special inquiry teams to halt the illegal sand mining in the banks of the Yamuna and Hindon rivers in Greater Noida, Uttar Pradesh, she took on the “sand mafia” and gained public attention. Under her direction, the government seized 24 dumper trucks, 300 trolleys, and 15 suspects who were fined a total of $20 million.

Without conducting an Environmental Impact Assessment, sand extraction was done in Delhi, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh. (EIA). Every day, roughly 250 to 350 trucks were unlawfully loaded with sand. This had a negative impact on the ecosystem and caused significant soil erosion along the river banks. Additionally, it causes the waterways to diverge by a few meters. The risk of flooding in the surrounding areas was extremely high as a result. Durga acted swiftly to stop it and established the Special Mining Squad. However, she was prevented from making headway in stopping this illegal mining by outside forces. She then seized an opportunity. thereby taking action to ensure a smooth process.

The Gautam Buddha Nagar police detained 15 people on the evening of July 29, 2013, seized 26 vehicles from the neighbourhood and filed seven cases, some of which were in the Dankaur and Greater Noida regions.

The raids

The illegal actions severely harmed the environment. At midnight, Durga began her attacks. She used to lead a group of skilled soldiers on nocturnal raids between two and three in the morning. Through small connections, she was able to reach the large mafias. The officer also failed to consider the personal danger she was taking. The cop made friends with the citizens. She made sure that everyone in the community participated equitably in the good deed. They informed her of new developments on the sites and kept her up to speed and she kept on raiding for about two weeks. She managed to grab hold of about 90 workers during this time. She also seized assets worth roughly INR 150 crore.

Suspension

A day after reportedly tearing down a wall of a mosque that was still being built in Kadalpur village, in the Rabupura neighbourhood of Greater Noida, Durga was suspended on July 28, 2013. The state administration had not given its approval for the mosque’s construction. Nagpal was not present at the scene when the incident occurred, according to her supporters and the majority of media sources, and neither was she the one who gave the command to tear down the wall. They contend that the allegations that Nagpal was involved in the demolition are untrue and that she was targeted because of her crusade against illegal sand mining. However, other sources cite locals from Kadalpur village who assert that Nagpal directly oversaw the wall’s demolition.

On August 16, Nagpal presented her response to the chargesheet brought by the UP government. In it, she pleaded her innocence and claimed that she had acted in accordance with the Supreme Court’s orders as well as the rules of service.

On September 21, 2013, Nagpal and her spouse Abhishek Singh had their first meeting with Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav since she had been suspended. On 22 September 2013, the UP administration lifted her suspension, and on 5 October 2013, she began serving as the Joint Magistrate of Kanpur (Rural).

Targeting of Family

Durga’s spouse, Abhishek Singh, a bureaucrat, was placed on administrative leave on October 11, 2014. The chief minister, Akhilesh Yadav, suspended him as Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) in Mahawan, Mathura, for reportedly treating a teacher, Fauran Singh, inhumanely.
