What is UPSC mains exam?

The Civil Services Examination’s second phase is the UPSC Mains exam. IAS candidates are eligible to take the UPSC Mains if they pass the Prelims, which requires them to receive more than the cutoff in General Studies Paper I and more than 33% in General Studies Paper-II (CSAT).

IAS 2023 Mains Exam Pattern for UPSC

In 2015, changes were made to the UPSC Mains or CSE (Main) pattern. The UPSC Mains 2023 will include nine theory papers (essay descriptive type) in accordance with the amended pattern. Only seven of the nine papers will be taken into account for merit ranking. For the UPSC Mains, candidates must also select one optional subject.
