After completing his tenth grade at a neighborhood Zilla Parishad Primary School in the Beed district, he left his village to continue his higher education in Aurangabad, where his older sibling was also enrolled. He chose the science stream for his intermediate studies at the suggestion of his brother. He then completed his undergraduate studies in Political Science, Sociology, and History at the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University in Aurangabad, receiving his degree in 1996.

Tukaram enrolled in Mumbai’s State College of Administrative Career after completing his graduation and began studying for the civil services test there. He simultaneously enrolled in a post-graduate political science study at a college in Mumbai. In 2001, he passed the State Civil Services Exam (MPSC) on his fourth try after failing the first three times and was hired as a second-class officer in the finance division. He continued after that. He passed the UPSC Civil Services Test in 2004 on his last try after eight years of relentless effort, placing 20th overall in India. He was subsequently appointed to the Maharashtra division after being chosen for the IAS.

Tukaram Mundhe Family

Mundhe was born into a forward-thinking Vanjari farmer household. His mother is Aasrabai Mundhe, and his father is Haribhau Mundhe. His father was a farmer. Ashok Mundhe, his older sibling, was the first graduate and government employee from his village. He was the one who motivated Tukaram to pursue a career as an IAS official.

When Tukaram finished his exercise Tukaram was named the Solapur Supernumerary Assistant Collector on August 22, 2005. Eliminating the illegal activities in Solapur was how he began his job. He raided and sealed a bar operated by a prominent local politician on the fourth day of his service in Solapur because there were illegal activities taking place there. Then he was appointed the Chief Officer of the Municipality of Barshi Block in Solapur as a portion of his training. He stopped a number of illegal activities that were being carried out in his region while he was on duty at the position. In the area, he cleared over 15000 unauthorized encroachments that were obstructing public transportation routes. Additionally, he warned the citizen to obey the law or else prepare for harsh punishment.

IAS Career

In September 2007, Tukaram assumed responsibility as the Assistant Collector of Deglur, Nanded after finishing his training. Then, after working there for about four months, he was appointed CEO of the Zilla Parishad in Nagpur. Immediately after being appointed Nagpur Zilla Parishad Chief in 2008. He went to several schools and noticed that several teachers had missed classes without giving any notification; the following day, all of those teachers received suspensions. After noticing irregularities in the medical treatment provided by government hospitals in the district, he also suspended some doctors.

Tukaram worked as the collector and district magistrate of Jalna, the additional tribal commissioner of Nashik (from March 2009 to July 2009), the CEO of Washim’s Zilla Parishad (from July 2009 to June 2010), the CEO of Mumbai’s KVIC (from June 2010 to June 2011), and the CEO of the Zilla Parishad in Mumbai (June 2011 to September 2012).

Threats from Politicians

An incident occurred in June 2020 when Nana Patole, the speaker of the Maharashtra assembly and an INC MLA, demanded the removal of Tukaram, the municipal commissioner of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation. Upon learning of the situation, the residents of Orange City started an online petition known as the People’s Confidence Motion to show their support for the civic chief. Tukaram received a transfer from Nagpur to Mumbai, his 15th move in his 15-year tenure, despite the petition’s failure to have any impact. He had also received death threats from various politicians. He worked as the joint commissioner of Sales Tax (investigation division) of Mumbai from September 2012 to November 2014. It was the longest post he ever held for almost 26 months.

Walk with commissioner

The “walk with commissioner” program, started by Tukaram, has gained popularity. Every Sunday, he listened to the issues of some top officials and members of the general public.

During the program, the general public offered Tukaram suggestions for changes he could make as well as feedback on what was working well in their community. He also concentrates on managing soil water and traffic congestion in reaction to public demand.
