Amit Lodha Biography

IPS Amit Lodha, who was born on 22 February 1974, is a student at IIT Delhi, in 1995. He finished his schooling at St. Xavier School. After completing IIT, he appeared for the UPSC exam and clear it on 1st attempt. Then, he joined the IPS in 1998 and then he was posted in the newly created area; Sheikhpura, of Bihar in 2005. Currently, (as of December 2022) Lodha is an Inspector General Officer (IGO) in Bihar. Amit Lodha’s idol was always ‘men in uniform’. Because his maternal grandfather was an IAS officer, he always had great respect towards him. Since he was a shy person, he never imagined that he would ever become an IPS officer and also wear the Khakee uniform. He wrote the book ‘Bihar Dairies’, which became the inspiration for “Khakee: The Bihar Chapter”, a Netflix series.

At first, Amit’s focus was on academics, and he cracked the IIT entrance exam on the first attempt. But his journey at IIT was depressed.

In an interview, he says,

"I failed at everything. I suffered from depression and suicidal thoughts. I thought I was the unluckiest person in the world. My grades were the worst, and my interpersonal relations poor. My friends liked me for the goodness of heart. But even they stayed away from me because I was quiet and perceived to be strange. Never invited to parties or the first choice for sharing rooms. I could never fit in." 

After having an unpleasant experience at IIT Delhi, Amit appeared for the UPSC examination and cleared the exam on his first attempt as well. He became an IPS officer in 1988 and due to the personal connections, he maintained with people, soon made his way into their hearts of them. Also, he became the SP of Nalanda, at the age of 25 years and then, the SSP of Muzaffarpur.

During his service days in Bihar, Lodha caught hold of ‘Gabbar Singh of Sheikhpura’. He dismantled and arrested the Mahto gang who were charged with several murder cases and the murders of two policemen were also included, during their jailbreak. It took three months for Amit and after an intense cat-and-mouse chase across the three states, he successfully managed to nab the dreaded gangster.

Amit Lodha’s 1st book Bihar Diaries (2018), which was written by him; contains information regarding his chase of the dreaded gangster Mahto (he did not name him in his book) was charged with several murder cases including the murders of 2 policemen during his jailbreak. The book became a hit among people and also inspired the Netflix series. He also wrote another book ‘Life in the Uniform’ which was published in 2021. It gave information on Lodha’s journey to UPSC.

The Netflix series Khakee: The Bihar Chapter, leading role by actor Karan Tacker and created by Neeraj Pandey, is a hit and get a positive response from the audience and critics. The show is based on the life’s chapter of IPS officer Amit Lodha, which he explained in the book ‘The Bihar Diaries’. Instead of celebrating the hit of the web series, the IPS officer Amit Lodha is courting controversy. 

After a case was registered against him, Officer has been suspended on the charges of corruption and for entering into a commercial agreement with Netflix while being at the post of IPS Officer.

According to the official statement, Amit is accused of using his position for financial gains by having an agreement with the production house named Friday Storytellers and the streaming platform, while he was in the position of an IPS officer. Also, the statement said that, after the investigation done by the department, the allegations against Lodha of corruption were found to be true, due to which a case was registered on the seventh of December by the Special Vigilance Unit (SVU) under sections 120B and 168 of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
