Early Political Career

Varun was exposed to politics by his mother, Maneka Gandhi, during the 1999 election campaign. Varun and his mother, Maneka Gandhi, officially joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in 2004.

Member of Parliament (MP)

Varun ran for the Pilibhit seat in the 2009 General Elections. He won by defeating V.M. Singh and became a Member of Parliament. It was by far the Gandhi family’s most important victory. According to media accounts, Varun was the only MP who had exhausted his MP Local Area Development Fund (MPLAD).

Varun was named the BJP’s national general secretary by Rajnath Singh in March 2013. He became the party’s youngest-ever General Secretary. In the 2019 general elections, he ran from the Pilibhit Lok Sabha Varun Gandhi constituency and won with approximately 250,000 ballots, becoming an MP for the third time in a row.

When Hazare was imprisoned in August 2011, Gandhi promised to table the Jan Lokpal Bill in Parliament. On August 24, he went to Ramlila Maidan as a commoner to support Anna Hazare’s cause, becoming the first politician to publicly support the anti-corruption movement.
