Teaching Career
Before joining state politics, Draupadi worked as a schoolteacher. In 1994, she was an assistant lecturer at the Shri Aurobindo Integral Education and Research Institute in Rairangpur, and in 1979, she was a Junior Assistant at the Government of Odisha’s Irrigation Department.
Early Political Career
In 1997, Draupadi joined BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party). She was elected as a Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat councillor. She was appointed the Chairperson of Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat in 2000. Draupadi was also elected the National Vice-President of the BJP Scheduled Tribes Morcha.
Draupadi started serving as Minister of State with Independent Charge of Commerce and Transportation from March 6, 2000, till August 6, 2000. From August 6, 2002, to May 16, 2004, she was the Minister of Fisheries and Animal Resources Development. She was also appointed former Odisha Minister in 2000. In 2004, she was also the Rairangpur Assembly Constituency MLA. Draupadi was chosen chairperson of Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat, and she later became MLA from the same Rairangpur in 2009.
Governor of Jharkhand
Draupadi Murmu president took over as Governor of Jharkhand on May 9, 2015, making her the state’s first female governor. She was also the first Orissa tribal leader to be chosen as governor of an Indian state. Her six-year tenure as Governor began in May 2015 and will end in July 2021.
Draupadi, the governor of Jharkhand at the time, refused to grant assent to a bill approved by the Jharkhand Legislative Assembly that sought to amend the Chota Nagpur Tenancy Act 1908 and the Santhal Pargana Tenancy Act 1949. The bill would have given the rights to tribals to make commercial use of their land while ensuring that the ownership of the land does not change. Draupadi, on the other hand, demanded an explanation from the Raghuvar Das-led BJP administration about the changes it would bring to tribals’ well-being.
Presidential Candidate 2022
Draupadi was nominated by the BJP in June 2022 as the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate for President of India in the following month’s poll. Yashwant Sinha was chosen as the opposition group’s presidential candidate. She won the 2022 Presidential election with a clear plurality, defeating opposition candidate Yashwant Sinha to become India’s 15th President on July 21, 2022.
Draupadi Presidency Oath
Draupadi was sworn in as the 15th President of India on July 26, 2022, by the 48th Chief Justice of India, N. V. Ramana, in the company of former Presidents, Vice Presidents, Prime Ministers, and other delegates. She is the youngest and first person chosen president of India since its independence in 1947. Draupadi is only the second woman to serve as President of India, following Pratibha Patil. She addressed the country for the first time as President of India on the eve of Independence Day, 14 August 2022. On the 75th anniversary of the country’s independence, she welcomed citizens.
In September 2022, she started a government programme called ‘Pradhanmantri TB mukht Bharat,’ which aims to eradicate tuberculosis in India. She was the first Indian President to open ‘Mysuru Dasara,’ a 10-day state festival in Karnataka. Murmu made extensive trips to the country’s northeastern states, including Assam, Mizoram, Nagaland, and Sikkim, in the early months, and participated in ceremonies for various development projects.
