She was 30 years old when she was given the ticket to compete against Arvind Kejriwal of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the 2015 Delhi Legislative Assembly election. On May 26, 2022, Nupur participated in a discussion on the Gyanvapi Mosque dispute on the Times Now television station, during which she made controversial comments about Muhammad’s wife Aisha’s age at the time of their marriage and the consummation of the marriage. A day later, Mohammed Zubair, co-founder of Alt News, a fact-checking website, posted a video clip of her comments on social media, prompting widespread criticism. Nonetheless, Sharma defended her remarks, accusing Zubair of “heavily editing the clip”; she also claimed to have received rape and death threats as a result, prompting Delhi Police to provide security. The following day, a police FIR (First Information Report) was filed against Sharma in Mumbai on the basis of “hurting religious sentiments.” By June 4, “insult to Prophet Mohammed” was one of the top ten trending subjects in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and Turkey.

On June 5, the Grand Mufti of Oman became the first important figure outside of India to criticize Sharma. He called for a boycott of all Indian goods and the confiscation of all Indian investments in Oman, describing the comments as “insolent and obscene rudeness.” The Qatari government summoned the Indian ambassador and demanded an instant condemnation and apology. The same day, Kuwait and Iran called the Indian envoys and handed them protest notes.

Nupur was removed from the BJP by the evening of June 5. Sharma later withdrew her comments “unconditionally.” Many BJP supporters, including some BJP politicians, backed her up and chastised the party and government for abandoning her and capitulating to foreign pressure.

In June, despite camping for 5 days, a Mumbai Police squad sent to Delhi to question Nupur was unable to find her. After a complaint was filed against her at the Narkeldanga police station, she sought a four-week extension to appear before the Kolkata Police in an email on June 20.
