Shiv Nadar Education

Shiv attended Kumbakonam’s Town Higher Secondary School. He also attended Elango Corporation Higher Secondary School in Madurai. In June 1955, he was accepted to the first form (sixth standard) and attended Town High School until June 1957. Later, he enrolled in St. Joseph Boys Higher Secondary School in Trichy, where he finished his high school education. Shiv graduated from American College in Madurai with a pre-university degree and from PSG College of Technology in Coimbatore with a degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering.

Nadar started his career at the College of Engineering Pune (COEP) in 1967, then moved on to Cooper Engineering Company before taking a new position in the digital products division of Delhi Cloth Mills. DCM was India’s fourth-largest firm at the moment.

Microcomp, a company centred on selling teledigital calculators in the Indian market, was Nadar and his partners’ first venture. HCL was established in 1976 with an Rs. 187,000 investment.

Shiv moved to the American computer hardware market in 1989, but they were unable to join due to the presence of Apple and the strict restrictions of the American market. However, to penetrate the US market, HCL partnered with Hewlett Packard in 1991, forming HCL HP Limited. He divided the company into several categories in 1998: HCL Technologies was the global IT service company, NIIT was the educational service wing HCL Infosystems was the IT hardware provider, HCL Comnet was the network provider and HCL Perot for delivering IT applications.

In 1978, HCL built the first personal computer in Nadar’s workshop. They introduced the first PC, known as the HCL Workhorse, to Indian consumers in 1983. The founders of the business travelled around the world to bring back PCs, which they disassembled and researched in order to make their own. In 1985, the HCL busy bee, the first multi-processor version of Unix, was released. HCL defeated Sun Microsystems and HP by creating the system three years before them.

He established Shiv Nadar Foundation in 1994 to concentrate more on his philanthropic interests. The foundation’s goal was to work for future generations benefit by providing them with access to education and a decent quality of life. Shiv established the Sri Sivasubramanium Nadar College of Engineering in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, in 1996, in memory of his father, to follow his philanthropic interests. He stated in 2006 that the college will support research in addition to ensuring that students benefit from foreign university collaborations. Shiv joined the Indian School of Business’s executive council in 2005. Shiv’s SSN Trust declared in March 2008 the establishment of two Vidyagyan schools in Uttar Pradesh for rural students, with free scholarships for 200 students from the state’s 50 districts. In February 2011, he visited Town Higher Secondary School and gave computers and other equipment worth Rs. 80 lakhs. Until 2014, he was the chairman of the board of governors of the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur (IIT Kharagpur).

He also established Shiv Nadar University Delhi and Shiv Nadar University Chennai.
