Sinha entered the Indian Administrative Service in 1960 and held important positions for the next 24 years. For four years, he served as Sub-Divisional Magistrate and District Judge. For two years, he was Under Secretary and Deputy Secretary in the Finance Department of the Bihar Government, after which he served as Deputy Secretary to the Government of India in the Ministry of Commerce.

From 1971 to 1973, he worked as the Indian Embassy’s First Secretary (Commercial) in Bonn, West Germany. From 1973 to 1974, he served as India’s Consul General in Frankfurt. He gained experience in foreign trade and India’s relations with the European Economic Community after working in this area for over seven years. Following that, he worked for the Government of Bihar State’s Department of Industrial Infrastructure and the Government of India’s Ministry of Industry, where he dealt with international industrial collaborations etc.

From 1980 to 1984, he was Joint Secretary to the Government of India in the Ministry of Surface Transport, with primary duties for road transport, ports, and shipping. In 1984, he withdrew from the military. However, he resigned in 1984.

Janta Dal

Sinha became acquainted with the political ideas of Indian socialist leader Jaya Prakash Narayan during his years as a bureaucrat. After resigning from the Indian Administrative Service in 1984, Sinha entered active politics as a member of the Janata Party and he was named the party’s All-India General Secretary in 1986. Sinha party’s All-India General Secretary was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1988.

Sinha has been named as the Presidential candidate for the 2022 election. In 2022, Yashwant Sinha party was Trinamool Congress. Sinha likes reading and writing novels. Sinha has penned a memoir about his time as Finance Minister in 2007 and the title of the book is “Confessions of a Swadeshi”.

He and Aditya Sinha co-wrote the novel India Unmade in 2018. He also wrote Relentless: An Autobiography in 2019 and Relentless: An Autobiography in 2020.
